The song, written by Mick Kennedy and performed by Marina Florance, was the result of a series of discussions between the duo about their backgrounds and experiences. Mick, being Irish has been concerned for many years about the divided communities in the Northern Ireland province. Similarly, Marina’s family are Greek Cypriot and have also seen the division of their country and the occupation of their families land.

“We really should celebrate the things we have in common with each other and admire the differences between us. Music is a common thread among people, sometimes hated enemies playing the same instruments and songs as each other.” Mick Kennedy

With its easily learnt chorus, narrow vocal range, simple lyrics and slow tempo; Side By Side can be quickly picked up by children. The song could be used in schools to enhance and develop the awareness of multi-cultural issues. There is also the possibility of adding actions to the words – something the children and teachers can come up with together.
